Let's talk fanny.....

Hey there walkers (& crew)…

Ok… you have gotten the training schedule and started fundraising and may have even taken a walk around the block or two. So let’s talk about another important piece of equipment in your 3-Day venture. Your fanny pack!

YES, you need a fanny pack. Or at least something to put things in…it’s like a purse for your hips! ;) There are certain essentials that you will need for an event like this. The 3-Day is not just a walk around the park. There will be varied terrain and weather and you need to be prepared.

Now here is my previous fanny pack (Anthony is now the proud owner of this one...minus the frog! He's mine!)

Ok… disclaimer time again! I will give lots of advice in the blog, but by no means is this the gospel. This is just advice….take it or leave it!

You do not need to spend a lot of money on this. But there are a few things to consider when purchasing this. A pack with two water bottle holders is best….HONEST! Plus it acts as a balancer for your hips. Plus one bottle for water, one for Gatorade! (learn to like it… it will save your butt!)

Plus you will need a zippered section to keep your wallet/ID or ICE (In Case of Emergency contact), extra socks, blister pack (more information later), sunscreen (skin & lips), rain poncho, cell phone (which is off and not to be used while walking), body glide and other miscellaneous things. I know it sounds like I just listed a ton of stuff but it will fit in that pack. The key is Ziploc bags…yes, Ziploc bags! They keep things organized in a small space and they make everything waterproof. Yes, most of this stuff will get wet. Either a freak rainstorm (ha) or loose water bottle top will test this… I promise!

Wal-Mart has a good pack in the sporting goods section for $10. Target has a slighter more durable version for $20. I have used both… The $10 one was ok but the straps wore thin… the $20 one made it through three 3-Days and lots of training walks. You decide. Both of these versions come with water bottles BUT they were not good bottles. They were hard plastic bottles with narrow openings. I would suggest investing in $4 bike bottles. They are made of soft plastic, have a pop top on them and have wide mouths. These will be easier to fill with ice and you won’t need to unscrew the cap when you want to take a drink. Well worth the investment!
If you can’t stand something around your waist, you may want to invest in a Camelback. These are hydration backpacks. They are a little more expensive but great as well plus they can cool your back if you fill them with ice! Just remember, you will want one with some extra space for the other things. Sports Authority has lots for you to try. If you find one you like, you may be able to get it cheaper online.

As far as the other things I mentioned for your pack --- wallet/ID or ICE – accidents happen. You need to have some identification and contact info, especially if you train alone.

Extra socks – on event you will want to change your socks at lunch time. Why? Feet sweat! Your feet will be happy and happy feet make happy walkers.

Blister pack – This one worries people. The blister pack is meant to be a preventative measure. There is a 99.9% chance of getting a blister either during training or on event. It’s great to have the tools you need to take care of it. By no means and I saying that you need to lance it 5 miles into your day! Just the opposite! Blisters should NEVER be popped! NEVER! Blisters are the body’s way of protecting itself. If you get a blister, leave the skin in place and apply a bit of Neosporin and top with a Band-Aid. They tend to heal quickly if taken care of. So your blister pack should have the following things: Neosporin, Band-Aids, moleskin (for hot spots), baby powder (keeps feet dry), manicure scissors (to cut moleskin), toe sleeves (check Walgreens…these are great!) and blister Band-Aids. All of this will fit great in a quart size FREEZER Ziploc bag. Hint, hint!

Here's mine!

Sunscreen – A MUST HAVE! We are walking for Breast Cancer, there is no sense in getting skin cancer in the process! You will want a sports sunscreen… 30 SPF minimum! Try a couple versions to find what works for you. You want one that is sweat proof and won’t burn your eyes! While in the sunscreen aisle, check out the lip protection! Most people don’t think of their lips until it’s too late. Again minimum SPF of 30. Sun poisoning on your lips is horrible… right Anthony! Or should I say Angelina! ;)

Rain poncho – It’s Florida, it will probably rain. If not on event, definitely during training! You can get them for 99 cents. Buy three just in case because if you do use it, folding it back up to fit in the little tiny pouch is impossible. Plus it makes a great ground cover at lunch and pit stops.

Cell phone – THIS IS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY. I know I sound like a broken record, but cell phones are not allowed on the route of the 3-Day… period! It is a safety hazard to you, other walkers and crew members on event. If you need to use your phone on the route, step off and while standing still or sitting, use the phone. Better yet, wait until a pit stop or lunch to make that call. If you use your phone on event, I will probably be the one yelling at you! The route safety and sweep teams see everything and we just want you to be safe! :)

Body Glide – What a fabulous product! I think this literally saved a few butts on event… mine included.
This type of distance walking causes skin to rub. Rubbing is BAD! Body glide comes in a deodorant type stick container so no messy hands or gooey feeling like with Vaseline. It’s great for feet, toes, heels, upper arms, thighs, knees …and even a few other areas! Wink, wink! I would highly recommend getting your own because you will not want to share… especially if you know where other people may be putting it! ;) This is available at Sports Authority or at a bike shop.
Just beware of the Body Glide with the RED cap. This is the Ben Gay version. Great for after the walk but may cause some issues on the walk itself. It can heat up really fast!!!

As far as miscellenous stuff, you will find out through training. I included a yoga strap for stretching and Destin baby ointment for road rash (this is the best!... takes the burn and stinging out almost immediately). I also have a dry wick towel that I attached to my pack. A golf towel works too… just something to keep the sweat out of your eyes plus it was a great way to keep my hands busy to keep “sausage fingers” under control!

Ok… I think this covers the fanny….pack! ;) We can do a fanny pack workshop if that would help. Just let me know! ;)

Walk and talk to you soon.

Getting Ready...

Hey there walkers…

I know many of you’re a very anxious to start training….but patience is a virtue. I am planning walks based on the Tampa Bay training schedule but I will be including training schedule for all 14 walks.

Orlando is a very diverse area in the 3-Day world. We have walkers and crew participating in 13 out of 14 cities! WOW!! I think San Francisco scared a few people away!! ;) It scares me…. Lots of HILLS! Because we are so diverse, I will be doing many walks with options to help accommodate these mileage differences.

I know there are several first time walkers...congrats and welcome to a wonderful and supportive community. You are never alone on the 3-Day! :) I would suggest that you start your 3-Day experience by reading… what…. Amy, have you lost your mind? This is about walking….let’s walk! Not so fast, there are lots of things to consider before hitting the trail, road, sidewalk, beach, water… oops, we don’t walk on water! ;) Your walker handbook has lots of great information in it so you should take a quick read to get yourself acquainted with it! (No, there will not be a test!)

Before you lace up those sneakers and hit the road, let’s talk about those sneakers. This will be your biggest investment! Don’t take it too lightly! Yes, sneakers can be expensive but remember that your feet will be walking 60+ miles in three days and 571 miles of training (if you do the 24 week training schedule to a tee!) In 5 events, I have seen just about everything bad that can happened to feet happen! Not to me but I have seen it! If you want to be able to look back on your 3-Day experience with fond memories, invest in the sneakers!
[I will give lots of advice in the blog, but by no means is this the gospel. This is just advice….take it or leave it! (yes, this is my disclaimer!)]

I would advise being professionally fitted for your sneakers. TrackShack is a great source for this. You need to tell the sales person what you are doing so they can determine the best fit for you. Also, you can get fitted at TrackShack and then buy your shoes somewhere else. Totally up to you. The New Balance stores will also fit you. I have used NBs from the first step of my very first training walk. I have never had a major problem. A couple that might have been my fault…ie socks and toenails but never a problem from the fitting.

Where ever you buy sneakers, ask about there return policy. If they don’t work for you, don’t keep them. Most places are really good about this.

Once you have found the shoes, onto socks! Yes, socks are extremely important. I have tried almost every sock on the planet…. Cheap one, expensive ones.. you name them, I’ve had them! Last year, Thorlos was a sponsor of the 3-Day. They gave samples out to all walkers. Not the best sock for me BUT I did find out that there was a Thorlos OUTLET on I-Drive. I went in there WITH my sneakers and they let me try on almost every sock until I found the right level for me! (Level 1 walkers) The outlet will be a little cheaper than if you order them online and the additional benefits of trying them on with your sneakers is great!

Ok…. Sneakers and socks… That’s a good start. :)

I will be adding a new topic every week so add me to your favorites!

It's Time.....

Ok.... it's time to get the 2008 season started! :)

You have all waited patiently so make sure to bookmark this site for weekly (and sometimes more frequent updates!)

Training will be starting soon so now is a great time to get your fundraising into full gear! The best thing I can tell you about fundraising.... ask big, ask often and ask again! Be passionate about the cause and event and the money will follow! Plus, tell everyone what you are doing! Yes, they may think you are crazy... aren't we all?! But you never know who they know or how much they may donate!

I know everyone is very excited to get started so if you have any questions, just drop me a line or leave a comment!

You Can Do This!! ;)

Week of October 15

WOW... it's time! One last deep breath and get ready for an experience that will change your life, either good or bad.

Some people realize that this event was more than they could take and vow never to do it again. Some people leave this event feeling energized with a renewed sense of hope, caring, faith that YES, together, we can find a cure for this disease. Most people leave with blisters... (maybe just one! :) ) but they also leave with stories to tell and a smile in your heart that will never be replace.

My heart smiles on all of you as you take that first step of the journey on Friday. The fear and anxious will melt and the smiles, laughter and yes, tears will heal the body, mind and soul.... and yes, blisters too! Don't be afraid because you are never alone... you are part of an incredible community that is resilient and strong and always caring and supportive. Enjoy every moment, every step, every conversation, every cheering supporter, every guy wear a pink bra, every little boy on the corner with the "Thanks for helping my mom" sign... just enjoy! This time will fly so sometimes it's good to just slow down and enjoy! It's not a race... no one is there to cheer for the first walker BUT everyone cheers for the last!

Here's the training schedule for the week.

Stay Alert, Stay Alive

Week of October 8th

Ok...we are down to almost single digits! Nervous? Excited? It's totally normal! The biggest thing now is to continue that training... you may want to add a couple hills to your training walks this week and next ...HINT, HINT!!! ;) Don't worry so much about the sand from the beach...hills would be better!

Plus it's time to pack. Remember less is more! You probably won't use 1/2 of the stuff you bring. Plus if you pack now, you have a few extra days to get those things you can't find! ;)

Your credentials should be arriving either this week or the beginning of next. They will have all your information you need on it.... meal types, tent location, towel service (if you purchased it). I have seen several questions regarding tentmates floating around.... the deadline to request a tentmate was September 19. After that, all assignments are random. The best way to check who your tentmate is, is to go back to your online check in and look at the confirmation page. It will have your tent location and tentmate.

I have also seen some emails about ride share and Thursday night hotels. Also try checking the message boards on the 3-Day page. They get busier closer to event.

Here's the training schedule for the week.

What to Pack for the 3-Day

Our “A Day on the 3-Day” Workshop was great. Thanks to everyone who came out! For those who couldn’t attend I wanted to put together a little blurb to get you up to speed.

First of all, soft sided duffle bags work best. Leave the suitcase for your next vacation. Be creative with your bag. You will see lots of pink bags and finding yours in a sea of pink is not fun!

Once you have the bag, get another….garbage bag that is! Line the inside of your duffle bag with a garbage bag. Trucks get unloaded even in the rain, so be prepared. There’s nothing worse than rain while you walk but then add wet clothes to change in to…yucky!

I suggest packing all your stuff into 2.5 gallon Hefty zipper bags. Why you ask? 1. You can keep each day’s clothes together so there is no digging in the bottom of your bag for stuff. 2. Dryness …again! 3. They work great to put the stinky walking clothes back into after your shower. You have no idea what used walking clothes that have been fermenting for two days smell like! Why risk it?

As far as sleeping accommodations, pool floats work great. This time of year they are usually on clearance so keep your eyes peeled. Plus a hand pump works fine to inflate them. But a battery powered pump would be easier. Just remember…it adds weight to your bag and stress to our Gear and Tent Crew. Please be kind…35ish pounds per bag. A couple pounds over is fine….double the weight limit…nope!!

Also remember, everything must be in your duffle bag. You can not attach anything to your bag…ie sleeping bags, etc. This has happened before where folks have attached their sleeping bags to their duffles with bungee cords. Please avoid doing this. The hard working crew handles every piece of luggage and 9 times out of 10 the bungee cord comes undone and hurts someone.

Use the check list on the 3-Day home page for reference. They have a really great list.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! :)
